AI Engineer Interview Preparation Guide

An AI engineer interview should connect model behavior to the surrounding application contract. Prepare to distinguish retrieval, answer generation, evidence checking, and permitted action so a convincing demonstration does not substitute for a useful and controlled system.

Define the assistant's supported task

Practice case: “An internal assistant answers questions about company procedures, but sometimes cites an outdated document and offers to update a record without knowing whether the user has permission; how would you investigate?” Separate answering a question from changing a system. Ask which documents are authoritative, which audience the assistant supports, and what actions are permitted. This original exercise includes several failure boundaries that a more persuasive prompt alone may not resolve.

Write a small task contract: what question the assistant should answer, which evidence it may use, and how it behaves when evidence is missing or conflicting. Treat source freshness and user permissions as application responsibilities that need defined enforcement. Do not assume a model can determine access rights from conversational context. The scenario provides no authorization to execute a real update or to test against private organizational records.

Separate retrieval failure from answer failure

Trace a labeled example through the available document set, selected passages, and generated answer. If the current procedure was never indexed, changing the answer style will not make it available. If the correct passage was supplied but ignored, the investigation moves elsewhere. Explain how you would distinguish those cases before changing chunk size, model choice, or instructions. A list of AI components is less useful than an observation that identifies the failing boundary.

Define a small evaluation set containing answerable questions, conflicting versions, missing evidence, and disallowed actions. OpenAI's evaluation guidance supports task-specific objectives and representative cases; its examples do not establish a universal pass threshold for this application. Include both answer correctness and evidence support where appropriate. Keep an evaluator's judgment separate from unquestionable truth, especially when a model is used to assess another model's output.

Respond to conflicting document versions

Follow-up: “What would you do if two accessible documents disagree and neither has an authoritative owner or effective date?” Explain the uncertainty rather than selecting whichever passage ranks higher and presenting it as settled policy. Compare asking for clarification, reporting the conflict, and routing to an accountable source owner. The system may help locate evidence, but a similarity score cannot decide an organizational policy dispute that the underlying documents do not resolve.

Consider what the user needs to continue without being misled. A response could describe the conflict and identify what must be confirmed, provided that doing so respects access boundaries. Do not fabricate a policy version or imply that a citation makes an answer authoritative by itself. In an interview story, explain whether your work improved retrieval, answer support, or source governance; those are related contributions with different evidence requirements.

Bound an action separately from an answer

Follow-up: “How would the design change if users may request a record update from the same conversation?” Describe a separate action boundary with application-enforced permission checks and explicit supported inputs. Decide when confirmation is required by the product's policy and how the system reports the actual result. A generated statement such as updated successfully should follow a verified operation outcome rather than the model's intention or a plausible-sounding completion message.

Test denied, invalid, failed, and uncertain outcomes alongside successful updates using a controlled test environment. Keep external writes out of interview rehearsal unless the exercise explicitly provides a safe target and authorization. Explain recovery when an operation result is unknown without promising universal duplicate prevention. A correct factual answer does not prove an action is allowed, and a permitted action does not prove that the source material used to recommend it was current.

Tell an application-level AI story

Rehearse the task boundary, failing example, diagnostic trace, evaluation set, and action control. Include which evidence changed the design and what remains unresolved. A useful project account separates a prototype demonstration from an evaluated deployment and distinguishes observed behavior from estimated business benefit. Credit data, platform, security, and product collaborators where their work made the application possible instead of treating every component as your personal implementation.

These original hypothetical questions are not a reported employer assessment or a certification of an agent architecture. The worksheet helps connect answer quality with evidence and permitted action. Consult current primary documentation for specific providers and tools. A successful prompt, a citation, or a passing small evaluation set cannot alone establish current knowledge, access correctness, or reliable behavior across every user request the application may receive.
